Method

How it works and the exact formula

PSL is a rating scale that originated on looksmaxxing forums (the letters come from three early forum names). It rates faces from 1 to 8, where 4 is average and each step above is rarer: 5 is above average, 6 is 'Chadlite' or 'Stacylite', 7 is model-tier and 8 is a theoretical ceiling. Ratings are usually given by other users, which makes them inconsistent and harsh. This test gives you a reproducible, measurement-based estimate instead.

The scan is the same 478-landmark analysis that powers our attractiveness test. MediaPipe Face Landmarker runs in your browser; we level the face on the iris line and measure 11 ratios, including symmetry, thirds, canthal tilt, fWHR, midface ratio, jaw-to-cheek and jaw angle. Each is scored against a reference target and combined into a harmony score from 35 to 98.

We then map harmony onto the PSL scale with a linear transform anchored at harmony 70 = PSL 4.0 (average), with each 8 harmony points equal to one PSL step. Because harmony is capped at 98, the estimate tops out at 7.5: a geometric scan alone should never claim the theoretical 8. The panel shows your PSL estimate, its tier name and the two ratios that raise and lower it most. The tiers are deliberately conservative: very few people measure above 6, just as forum ratings intend.

Be careful with what a PSL number means. Community PSL ratings mix bone structure with skin, hair, body, height and photo quality, and they are often given in deliberately negative ways. Our estimate covers bone-structure geometry only, from a single photo. Use it to understand your proportions, not as a ranking of your value.

Weighted sum
W = 0.20·symmetry + 0.14·thirds + 0.10·tilt + 0.10·LWR + 0.10·midface + 0.08·fWHR + 0.08·eye spacing + 0.07·jaw + 0.05·nose + 0.04·mouth + 0.04·jaw angle

harmony = clamp(30 + 0.68 · W, 35, 98)
PSL estimate
PSL = clamp(4 + (harmony − 70) ÷ 8, 1, 8), rounded to 0.1 (max 7.5 since harmony ≤ 98)

Harmony percentiles come from the scorer's modelled curve, which ranks feature scores rather than PSL ratings. Percentiles are modelled from the reference distribution our scorer uses (scores are mapped through a normal curve, mean 60, SD 18), not from a database of user faces. We don't build one: selfies are deleted within 2 hours and free scan results after 48 hours.

Styling

Styling and virtual try-on by result

Looksmaxxing advice is often extreme. These are low-risk, reversible changes that move how your measured ratios read.

Weak ratio: thirds

A fringe for a long upper third, or jaw-level volume and a short beard for a long lower third.

Measure thirds and fifths

Weak ratio: jaw

Tighter sides, a defined beard line and V-necks add contrast at the jaw corner.

Rate your jawline

Weak ratio: canthal tilt

Brow grooming that lifts the tail and frames with an upswept top line change how tilt reads.

Measure each eye

Score varies by photo

Photo quality is the fastest 'looksmax': eye-level camera, arm's length, front light, neutral face.

PSL Score Test: frequently asked questions

What is the PSL scale?

A 1–8 face rating scale from looksmaxxing forums where 4 is average, 5 is above average, 6 is Chadlite or Stacylite, 7 is model-tier and 8 is a theoretical maximum. It's an informal community scale, not a scientific instrument.

What is an average PSL score?

4 by definition. On our estimate, average harmony (around 70) maps to PSL 4.0, and most people fall between 3.5 and 5.

How accurate is a PSL calculator?

Ours is consistent because it's computed from measurements, but it covers geometry only. Forum PSL ratings also include skin, hair, height and frame, and vary a lot between raters.

What does Chadlite mean on the PSL scale?

Chadlite (or Stacylite for women) refers to roughly PSL 6: clearly above average, but short of model-tier. On our estimate that corresponds to a harmony score in the high 80s or low 90s.

Can you increase your PSL score?

You can't change bone structure without surgery, but grooming, haircut, body fat, skin care and especially photo quality change both measured and perceived ratings. Be wary of extreme looksmaxxing advice.

Is looksmaxxing healthy?

Grooming, fitness and style are healthy ways to feel better about how you look. Obsessive rating, extreme dieting or risky procedures are not. If face ratings are causing distress, take a break from them and talk to someone you trust.

How does this compare with Umax or other PSL apps?

We don't know how other apps compute their scores. Ours shows every landmark, ratio, target and weight, runs in your browser without uploading your photo, and is free with no subscription.
