Looksmaxxing Chart and PSL Scale Explained: From Sub-5 to Chadlite and True Harmony

The PSL scale explained: what each looksmaxxing tier from sub-5 to Chadlite means, how forum ratings differ from measured harmony and how to check yours.

By the TheFaceRating Editorial TeamPublished

If you've spent time in looksmaxxing communities you've seen ratings like "PSL 5", "sub-5" or "Chadlite". This guide explains where the PSL scale comes from, what each tier means, how forum ratings differ from measured facial harmony, and how to use ratings without letting them use you.

Where the PSL scale comes from

PSL is named after early looksmaxxing forums (the letters are commonly expanded from three forum names). It rates faces from 1 to 8, where 4 is average. Unlike a 1–10 "rate me" scale, which tends to inflate, PSL is deliberately harsh: each step above 4 is meant to be rarer than the last.

The PSL chart

PSLCommon labelMeaning
8Theoretical maximumA ceiling practically no one reaches
7Model tier ("Chad" / "Stacy")Top models and actors
6"Chadlite" / "Stacylite"Clearly attractive, stands out in a crowd
5High-tier normal (HTN)Above average
4Mid-tier normal (MTN)Average
3Low-tier normal (LTN)Slightly below average
1–2Well below averageRarely used for real people

"Sub-5" simply means below 5, which, by definition, includes most people. Forum ratings are often given in deliberately negative ways, so treat them with caution.

What PSL ratings actually measure

Forum PSL ratings mix several things:

  • Bone structure: proportions, jaw, cheekbones, eye area. This is what a geometric scan measures.
  • Soft tissue: body fat, skin quality, under-eye area.
  • Hair and grooming: hairline, haircut, beard, brows.
  • Height and frame: often included even though they're not facial.
  • Photo quality: lens distance, lighting and angle can move a rating by a full point.

"True harmony"

"Harmony" in looksmaxxing means features that work together, rather than any single standout feature. Measured harmony is the closest objective analogue: our PSL score test measures 11 ratios (symmetry, thirds, canthal tilt, fWHR, midface, jaw and more), scores each against a reference and combines them into a harmony score from 35 to 98. It then maps harmony onto PSL with a published transform: PSL = 4 + (harmony − 70) ÷ 8, capped so a single photo can never claim the theoretical 8.

Why forum ratings are inconsistent

  • Rater mood and culture: forums reward harsh ratings, so averages drift downward over time.
  • Photo selection: one flattering photo and one unflattering photo of the same person can be rated a full point apart.
  • Halo effects: a strong single feature (eyes, jaw) can pull a rating up even when overall harmony is average.
  • Different scales: some raters use PSL, others a 1–10 scale converted on the fly, and few agree on where the tiers start.

A measured estimate removes the first three and makes the fourth explicit. It still can't settle what attractiveness is, but it gives you a fixed reference to compare your own photos and changes against.

How photo quality moves a rating

Lens distance alone can change perceived proportions significantly: selfies taken about 30 cm from the face enlarge the nose and narrow the face compared with photos taken from 1.5 m. Overhead light deepens eye shadows and makes the eye area read tired; a turned head makes one side of the jaw look weaker. Before you conclude anything from a rating, compare the same expression and pose under the same light.

Low-risk ways to improve how you're rated

  • Photo quality first. Arm's length, eye level, front light, neutral expression. Use the photo A/B battle to pick your best shot.
  • Haircut matched to your face shape. The single biggest reversible change. See hairstyles for every face shape.
  • Grooming: brows, beard line and skin care.
  • Fitness and sleep: lower body fat sharpens the jaw and cheekbones over months.
  • Frames and necklines that balance your proportions.

Measured harmony vs. perceived attractiveness

Face-perception research shows that people form impressions of attractiveness, trustworthiness and competence from a face within a fraction of a second, and that those impressions depend on expression and context as well as structure. A geometric scan captures structure well and expression and context not at all. That's why a high harmony score doesn't guarantee a high rating from strangers, and why a warm, relaxed expression in a well-lit photo often does more for how you're perceived than any single ratio.

A word on wellbeing

Rating culture can be harsh, and some looksmaxxing advice is risky. If face ratings are making you anxious, step away from them and talk to someone you trust. Your rating on a forum scale says very little about your worth, your relationships or your future.

Frequently asked questions

What is PSL in looksmaxxing?

A 1–8 face rating scale from looksmaxxing forums where 4 is average, 5 is above average, 6 is Chadlite or Stacylite and 7 is model-tier.

What does sub-5 mean?

Below PSL 5, which includes average and below-average ratings, so most people. It's often used dismissively on forums.

What is Chadlite?

Roughly PSL 6: clearly attractive and above average, but short of model-tier.

How can I find my PSL score?

Forum ratings vary widely. For a consistent, measurement-based estimate, use the PSL score test, which maps your measured facial harmony onto the PSL scale.

Is a PSL 4 bad?

No. PSL 4 is the definition of average. Most people sit between 3.5 and 5.

What is HTN, MTN and LTN?

High-tier, mid-tier and low-tier normal: forum shorthand for roughly PSL 5, 4 and 3, the range where most people sit.

Does height affect PSL?

Forum ratings often factor it in, even though it isn't facial. Our PSL estimate is facial geometry only, so height, body and skin don't affect it.

Is PSL used for women too?

Yes. The same 1–8 scale is applied, with 'Stacylite' and 'Stacy' as the female equivalents of 'Chadlite' and 'Chad'.
