How it works and the exact formula
Necklines and collars frame the lower half of the face. The shape of the opening creates a line directly under your jaw, and the eye compares that line with your jawline and chin. A V-neck repeats a pointed shape and lengthens; a boat neck draws a horizontal line that widens; a scoop echoes curves and softens angles. Choosing the right neckline is one of the cheapest ways to rebalance your proportions.
This tool measures the three ratios that decide neckline choice. MediaPipe Face Landmarker places 478 landmarks in your browser; we level your face on the iris line and compute face length to cheekbone width, jaw width to cheekbone width and the angle at the jaw corner. From those we classify your face shape and pick necklines and collars from a library tagged by the shapes they balance.
Color matters as much as cut, because a neckline puts fabric right next to your skin. If you allow the optional AI color step, we determine your 12-season palette and the free preview renders a neckline in your best shade on your own photo. In the full report you get four necklines and outfits, each in colors from your season, rendered with identity-preserving AI so only the garment changes.
For menswear the same logic applies to collars. Spread collars and open necks add width to long faces; point collars and V-neck knits lengthen round faces; band collars and crew necks suit oval and long faces with strong jaws.
Fabric weight changes how strong a neckline line is. Stiff fabrics such as poplin shirting, structured knits and tailoring draw a crisp line that behaves exactly as the face-shape rules predict. Soft jersey, silk and drape blur the line, which is why a cowl neck softens even on a square face and a slinky V-neck reads gentler than a crisp one. If your measured jaw angle is soft, choose structured fabric near the face; if it's sharp, softer fabric balances it.
Accessories follow the same logic. Long pendants and lariats extend a V-line, so they suit round faces; chokers and short collars draw a horizontal line that suits long faces. Earrings work as small necklines: drops lengthen, studs and hoops at jaw level widen.

Benchmarks
Neckline strategy by measured face shape
| Face shape | Measured signal | Best necklines and collars | Why | Use with care |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Round | LWR ≤ 1.30 | Deep V, wrap, sweetheart, point collar | Vertical line lengthens | High crew, turtleneck, choker |
| Oblong | LWR ≥ 1.55 | Boat, square, crew, cowl, spread collar | Horizontal line widens | Deep plunge V |
| Square | Jaw ÷ cheek ≥ 0.87 | Scoop, cowl, sweetheart, soft drape | Curves soften angles | Square neck, strict boat |
| Heart | Forehead − jaw > 0.12 | Boat, square, scoop, cowl | Adds width below a narrow chin | Deep narrow V |
| Diamond | Forehead ÷ cheek < 0.80 | Sweetheart, scoop, off-shoulder | Widens forehead-to-chin outline | High halter |
| Oval | Balanced | Nearly all; choose by color season | No correction needed | Nothing specific |
The same thresholds drive the face-shape detector, so neckline advice always matches your shape result.

Soft jaw angle
V-necks and point collars create a sharp line under the chin that reads as definition.
Measure your jaw angleLong lower third
Higher necklines (crew, boat, cowl) shorten the visible lower face; avoid very deep V-necks.

What neckline is best for my face shape?
Round faces suit V and wrap necklines; long faces suit boat, square and crew necks; square faces suit scoop and cowl necks; heart faces suit boat and square necks; diamond faces suit sweetheart and scoop necks; oval faces suit almost everything.
What neckline makes a round face look slimmer?
Deep V-necks, wrap tops and open collars, because they draw a long vertical line below the chin. Avoid high crew necks and turtlenecks, which repeat the roundness.
What collar suits a long face for men?
Spread and cutaway collars, crew-neck knits and layered looks add width. Narrow point collars and deep V-neck sweaters lengthen the face further.
Can I virtually try on necklines?
Yes. The free color teaser includes one neckline in your best color rendered on your photo. The full report adds four necklines, and the Studio lets you upload any top for a compatibility rating and render.
Does neckline color matter more than cut?
They do different jobs: cut changes proportions, color changes how your skin looks. Ideally use both: a balancing cut in a color from your season.
What neckline suits a double chin?
Open V-necks and collars that lie flat and sit away from the neck, in a medium-weight fabric. Avoid high, tight necklines and heavy cowls directly under the chin.
What necklines suit a short neck?
Open necklines (V, scoop, open collar) show more skin and visually lengthen the neck. Turtlenecks and chokers shorten it.
What neckline is best for a strong jawline?
Scoop, cowl and sweetheart necklines in softer fabrics balance a strong, square jaw. If you want to emphasize it instead, a square neck or crisp open collar repeats the angle.
