By the TheFaceRating Editorial TeamPublished

People search for a TheFaceReport alternative for different reasons: some want to see results before paying, some want to know exactly how each number is calculated, and some want to go from "here is my face shape" to "here is what I should actually wear". This guide explains how TheFaceRating approaches facial analysis, where it differs, and what to check when you compare any face report service.

What a face report usually includes

Most online face reports combine three things: a set of facial measurements (proportions, symmetry, face shape), an overall score or rating, and recommendations. The quality of a report depends on how transparent the measurements are, how the score is built, and whether the recommendations are specific to your face or generic advice for your face shape.

What TheFaceRating does

  • Free on-device scan. Google's MediaPipe Face Landmarker places 478 landmarks on your photo inside your browser. The free measurements never upload your photo.
  • Transparent formulas. Every tool page lists the exact landmarks and formulas, from symmetry to canthal tilt and side profile.
  • No account to start. You don't need to sign up to scan; an email is only needed for purchases and the Studio.
  • Styling on your own photo. The paid report renders 14 identity-preserving try-ons (6 hairstyles, 4 necklines, 4 frames) on your real selfie, plus your 12-season palette.
  • One-time pricing. Reports are a single payment ($7.99, $16.99 or $24.99). There is no subscription.
  • Short retention. Uploaded selfies are deleted within 2 hours and free scan results after 48 hours.

How the free scan works

  1. Open the face shape detector or the homepage scanner and add a front-facing selfie.
  2. MediaPipe places 478 landmarks; we level your head using the line between your irises.
  3. Eleven proportions are computed (symmetry, thirds, canthal tilt, fWHR, length-to-width, midface, eye spacing, jaw, nose, mouth and jaw angle) and combined into a harmony score.
  4. You see your face shape probabilities and a bone-structure match from 30 reference faces.
  5. Optionally, tick consent for a free AI color analysis and one neckline preview in your best shade.

From measurements to outfits

The difference that matters most is what happens after the numbers. A face report that says "you have a heart-shaped face" leaves you to translate that into a haircut. Our report renders six haircuts, four necklines in your season's colors and four frames on your own photo using identity-preserving image editing, so the only thing that changes is the styling. In the Try-On Studio you can upload any reference look, get a 0–100 compatibility rating and see it on your selfie.

Take a scan-ready photo before comparing anything

Every face analysis tool, ours included, is only as good as the photo. Before you compare results between services, use the same photo for all of them and make it a good one:

  1. Distance: hold the phone at arm's length, or have someone take it from 1.5–2 m with the rear camera. Close selfies enlarge the nose and narrow the jaw.
  2. Height: camera at eye level. Shooting from below widens the jaw; from above shrinks the chin.
  3. Light: face a window in daylight. Overhead bulbs cast eye shadows that hide eye-corner landmarks.
  4. Expression: neutral and relaxed, mouth closed, looking into the lens.
  5. Hair: off the forehead and behind the ears so face width can be measured.

If two services disagree, a better photo usually closes most of the gap. The photo A/B battle can tell you which of your photos is the most faithful.

What to do with your results

Start with the region your scan says is weakest, because that's where styling changes perception most. A long lower third points to jaw-level volume and higher necklines; a soft jaw angle points to tapered sides and V-necks; uneven eye height points to frames with a level top bar. Each tool page lists the specific moves for its measurement, with links to preview them on your photo.

When another service may suit you better

If you want a long written consultation from a human expert, or a medical opinion about facial surgery, an automated tool is the wrong choice. Facial analysis apps, including ours, are for styling inspiration and curiosity, not diagnosis.

Bottom line

If you want to see your measurements for free, understand exactly how they're calculated and then see real styling options on your own face, start with the free scan. Compare the results with any other report you're considering using the checklist above.
