Umax is a popular face-rating app among people interested in looksmaxxing. If you're looking for an alternative, the usual reasons are cost (many apps in this category use recurring in-app subscriptions), wanting to rate your face without installing an app, or wanting to know how the score is calculated. This guide shows how to get a PSL-style rating and a full set of facial measurements in your browser for free.

Rating your face without an app
Our scanner runs in any modern browser on phone or desktop. Nothing to install, no account, and the free scan never uploads your photo: MediaPipe Face Landmarker runs locally through WebAssembly.
What TheFaceRating does
- Free on-device scan. Google's MediaPipe Face Landmarker places 478 landmarks on your photo inside your browser. The free measurements never upload your photo.
- Transparent formulas. Every tool page lists the exact landmarks and formulas, from symmetry to canthal tilt and side profile.
- No account to start. You don't need to sign up to scan; an email is only needed for purchases and the Studio.
- Styling on your own photo. The paid report renders 14 identity-preserving try-ons (6 hairstyles, 4 necklines, 4 frames) on your real selfie, plus your 12-season palette.
- One-time pricing. Reports are a single payment ($7.99, $16.99 or $24.99). There is no subscription.
- Short retention. Uploaded selfies are deleted within 2 hours and free scan results after 48 hours.
Get a PSL estimate in three steps
- Open the PSL score test and add a front-facing selfie taken at arm's length.
- The scanner measures 11 ratios and combines them into a harmony score from 35 to 98.
- Harmony is mapped onto the 1–8 PSL scale (harmony 70 = PSL 4, each 8 points = 1 step), with your tier name and the ratios that raise or lower it.
Because the transform is published, you can recompute your PSL from your harmony score yourself. See the PSL scale explained for what each tier means.

What you can measure for free
- Canthal tilt per eye, after head-tilt correction.
- Jawline rating: jaw-to-cheek ratio, jaw angle and fWHR.
- Side profile: convexity, nasolabial angle and E-line from the 3D mesh.
- Symmetry across 12 landmark pairs.
- Golden ratio, thirds and fifths.
A healthier way to use ratings
Face ratings are fun and useful for styling, but they measure geometry from one photo. Skin, expression, grooming, posture and confidence all change how people see you. If ratings start to make you feel worse rather than better, step away from them. The practical wins (a better haircut, frames that suit you, colors that flatter you, a good photo) are what our report is built around.
Take a scan-ready photo before comparing anything
Every face analysis tool, ours included, is only as good as the photo. Before you compare results between services, use the same photo for all of them and make it a good one:
- Distance: hold the phone at arm's length, or have someone take it from 1.5–2 m with the rear camera. Close selfies enlarge the nose and narrow the jaw.
- Height: camera at eye level. Shooting from below widens the jaw; from above shrinks the chin.
- Light: face a window in daylight. Overhead bulbs cast eye shadows that hide eye-corner landmarks.
- Expression: neutral and relaxed, mouth closed, looking into the lens.
- Hair: off the forehead and behind the ears so face width can be measured.
If two services disagree, a better photo usually closes most of the gap. The photo A/B battle can tell you which of your photos is the most faithful.
What a PSL number doesn't capture
A geometric PSL estimate describes the frame of your face, not everything people respond to. Skin clarity, eye area (dark circles, lid exposure), hair density and hairline, body composition and expression all shift how you're perceived, and forum raters factor in height too. That's why two people with the same PSL estimate can be rated a full point apart in person. Use the estimate to understand which ratios are strong and which are weak, then focus on the parts you can change: grooming, haircut, frames, fitness and a good photo.
When Umax may suit you better
If you prefer a native mobile app experience, or features specific to that app, it may be the better fit. If you want a free, transparent rating without installing anything, start with the browser scan.

No. The free tools are free, and the full report is a one-time payment from $7.99. Studio credits are sold in one-time packs.
